Welcome to the April 2026 issue of AI-Ready Data Access Insights

Our Customers Are Doing Extraordinary Things

The best part of this work is watching what our customers do with their data once it’s free to move. Hundred-thousand-dataset migrations completed in weeks. AI initiatives finally feeding on the data that actually runs the business.

Reporting modernizations that used to take quarters wrapping up in afternoons. The mainframe isn’t holding anyone back anymore — it’s becoming one of the most valuable data sources in the modern enterprise.

This month, we’re celebrating that momentum together. Meet PropelZ Multiplexer, our newest answer to enterprise-scale migration. Read about VirtualZ being named a Contender across three quadrants of the 2026 ISG Provider Lens study. And catch fresh perspectives on the blog and the Skyward Data Podcast.

Let’s dig in.

PropelZ Multiplexer | Million-File Migrations Made Manageable

Blog - PropelZ™ Multiplexer

When enterprises need to move 100,000+ mainframe datasets to the cloud, standard migration approaches hit a wall. Configuring individual transfer jobs at that scale requires dedicated teams working for months — with high error rates and limited visibility into progress.
PropelZ Multiplexer changes the equation. Instead of managing hundreds of thousands of separate operations, your team provides an inventory list and monitors a single status file. The Multiplexer handles the rest: dynamic scheduling, parallel execution, automated retries, and real-time progress tracking across every transfer.

The results speak for themselves. A virtual tape library migration of 200,000 datasets that might take months with individual transfer management can complete in weeks with the Multiplexer’s parallel processing and automated coordination. With 100-200 parallel transfers running on modern mainframe configurations, organizations process several thousand datasets per hour while maintaining full visibility and control.

Five Questions Every Enterprise Should Ask Before Their Next Modernization Project

Blog - Rethinking Mainframe Data Movement for the Cloud Era

For decades, enterprises have relied on managed file transfer (MFT) tools to move data in and out of the mainframe. These tools did their job well — they were built for a world of server-to-server transfers, scheduled batch windows, and on-premises endpoints. That world is changing.

Today, the destination is rarely another server down the hall. It is Google Cloud. It is AWS. It is Azure. It is a data lake feeding an AI model or a cloud-native analytics platform feeding the business. The volumes are larger, the timelines are shorter, and the downstream consumers are more demanding than ever.

The question enterprise architects should be asking is not whether their current file transfer tool still works. It almost certainly does.

The question is whether it was designed for the job they are about to ask it to do.

Legacy reporting tools like SAS and Easytrieve are getting more expensive, harder to staff, and increasingly out of step with the cloud data platforms your business already runs on. PropelZ changes the equation.

PropelZ is a lightweight, zIIP-eligible solution that moves mainframe data — VSAM, QSAM, Db2, IMS, IDMS, flat files — into your cloud target of choice (Databricks, Snowflake, Postgres, AlloyDB, GCS, and anything with a JDBC driver). Point it at a copybook, and it dynamically builds the schema on the landing zone, handles the EBCDIC-to-ASCII conversion, and streams the data over in parallel. Installation takes about 30 minutes. Incremental mode means after the first load, only changed records move — turning terabytes into a handful of rows.

In a recent benchmark engagement, PropelZ migrated 60 million VSAM records in roughly 15 minutes, and another customer measured 200% better throughput out of the box versus a bespoke file-transfer setup they’d spent months tuning.

On the Skyward Data Podcast

ETL for IBM Z is Evolving–and FAST

In this episode of the Skyward Data Podcast, Jeanne Glass, CEO at VirtualZ Computing, explores how enterprise storage strategies are changing in 2026 — and what customers actually need now.

Podcast - April newsletter

As cost pressure, AI initiatives, and hybrid environments reshape IT priorities, organizations are moving away from pre-provisioned storage and long migration projects. Instead, they’re adopting on-demand, elastic storage models that deliver instant access, lower costs, and flexibility — without disrupting mission-critical systems.

This episode covers the key storage trends defining 2026, including on-demand storage consumption, decoupling storage from access, hybrid cloud architectures, incremental modernization, support for AI and analytics workloads, and the shift from physical tape to cloud-based archival — without application changes.
